Steeping: Grain in Bags or Loose in the boiler?

Post by WishboneBrewery » Mon Apr 20, 2009 4:56 pm

OK, I seem to be reading conflicting view of steeping or boiling grains:

[*]The Graham Wheeler book just says boil all the grain for the full amount of time, no problems.
[*]Other sources say to steep the grains in bags then remove.

So... which is best?

I have some muslin bags ready in case I do Steep and Remove, but my only reason is to keep the sediment at a minimum.
My next question is, will my Hop Strainer do a good job of minimising the grain sediment coming from the boiler? (And is having a certain amount of 'Dead Space' part of this?)

Cheers :)

I've been wondering about this too. In the old days I just used to bung the whole lot in the pan, boil for X minutes then pour through a strainer. It always turned out fine. I'm going to do an extract brew in the next week or two as I'll soon have an empty keg available and I'm going to try my old way and see if I like the results.
Best wishes

So bagging the grain up and steeping is a good idea then, I found quite a bit of sediment passed over on my first tiny Extract brew experiment which was just chucking everything loose in the pan.
Cheers :)
