COLD BREAK

Post by trucker5774 » Sun May 31, 2009 11:43 am

After my boil .....................how important is the cold break. The plan is to place the pan in iced water rather than use a chiller. What would be different if I just added cold water to the boiled wort in the FV, as the resulting final temperature would be about the same at 25C (may even have to heat the top up water in the FV to get that temperature)

Chris to the rescue, again! Thanks mate. If I'm reading correctly, you are saying I will get away with not chilling the hot wort separately, but by doing it all in the FV with added cold water and the assistance of a cold bath too. If I use campden do I need to let the water stand over night befor use. I may move on to AG soon and notice that campden is added to the strike water with CRS

I was thinking of any effect from the campden at the time of pitching the yeast. I have always been told (rightly or wrongly) that the campden prevents the yeast from working until the gas clears?

a Campden tab will inhibit the yeast. You need to treat the water with campden before malt is introduced.

In high concentrations only. The amount you're going to use to treat the water prior to brewing will have no effect on the yeast.
Best wishes
