Can I bottle??

Post by GrafVonJon » Tue Sep 29, 2009 5:12 pm

Hi all,

Got a Brupacks Pride of Yorkshire kit fermenting away in the back room.
I did one of these a while back and was pleased.
This time I've added different aroma hops and a bit of elderflower to the mix.

Last time I just left it for a week and bottled it, and it was fine.

It's now been a week and I planned to bottle tonight. There is a bit of foam still on the beer, and what look like yellow patches of yeast floating on top.

I can't remember whether it looked like this last time or not.

Should I bottle it do you reckon? :(

The only way to be sure it's safe is to take a couple of specific gravity readings 24hrs apart.

The weather is cooler now, and a week may not be enough. If you don't have a hydrometer, I would recommend waiting at least a few more days.

Different people will have different approches to this, but personally I always leave any brew in the FV for a minimum of 2 weeks. This gives the yeast plenty of time to finish fermenting, and then clean-up some of the unwanted by products of fermentation. However, as Jim has noted if you take 2 gravity readinsg over successive days, and they're boththe same, the brew has finished fermenting and you can bottle if you wish.
