Torrefied Wheat

Post by gratefuldave54 » Fri Jan 08, 2010 10:14 am

Hello everyone, I'm interested in trying GW's Black Sheep Bitter but the recipe calls for torrefied wheat. As I'm only an extract brewer is there anything I could substitute for this or could I just chuck it in the boil with everything else ?. Cheers in advance - Dave.

Torrified Wheat needs to be mashed. It's main use is for head retention so you could leave it out and the beer will still taste fine. I've often wondered if wheat spraymalt would work as a substitute to improve head retention.
Best wishes

The kit wheat beers I`ve made with Wheat Spraymalt have had by far the biggest and long lasting heads of any beers I`ve made, kit or extract.

When I'm doing Yorkshire style ales that call for torrified wheat I use wheat malt as I prefer the taste. Wheat spraymalt would be fine I recon. :D
