Wherry Pale Ale

Wherry is so cheap at the minute that I've started using it as light malt extract syrup in my experiments. This is the latest - a recipe based loosely on Sierra Nevada pale ale.

I tin of Wherry 1.5Kg
1.4Kg light DSM
250g golden syrup
150g brown sugar

250g crystal malt 40L steeped for 1/2 hour @ 65C
1 oz northern brewer at start of 60 min boil
1 oz cascade 15 mins from end of boil
1 oz cascade at end of boil - steeped for 15 mins

5 gallon batch

OG 1050 - pitched safale SO4

This brew spent the first two days trying to get out of the fv, but has calmed down now. Will bottle at the weekend.

SN pale ale is available at asda at the minute. It's bottle conditioned, so will be culturing some up for the next brew if this tastes OK, but needs some tweeking.

this is exactly what im doing to get rid of a few 2 can kits i have.but due to the fact that these kits already have bittering hops in them its a bit hit and miss....am i right? made a headcracker brew like this and added some elderflower to it as well as post hops and dry hop and its turned out fantastic.just done the other tin with a slight slant to it .and also an admirals revenge.see how it goes

Think I might have over done it on the hops, but SNPA is meant to be very hoppy. Bottling tomorrow so we'll see in a couple of weeks. [-o<

Never used elderflower before. :?: Do you actually go and pick them from the hedgerows or do you buy them dried or as an extract? Do they go in the primary or the secondary and how much????

Hey micromaniac. What's the slight slant?

By the way when you dry hop is this in primary or secondary?

hi hightop you can get the elderflower from your hbs its comes dried and it smells great .i used 20gr for a 20min boil on my first attempt .the slant on next brew was 30 gr and post hopped for a little longer with a different amount of hops.as for dry hopping i put mine in the fv on day 3 till end thats about 6/7 days in total about 15gr.i have dry hopped this 2nd batch today and i,m thinking of putting a tea ball of goldings in the keg this time ,not sure yet as i have heard it can taste a bit grassy but its something ive wanted to try for a while so i might just do it and get it out of my system

Hello HighHops you can pick elder flower quite easily too (if it grows near you) but try and choose a tree/bush away from main roads and alos sniff it becuase it should smell sweet and delicious but some smell like cat pee. Best picked on a sunny day.
