Specific Gravity calculations

Post by Frothy » Fri Jun 16, 2006 5:38 pm

scratching my head here

Making a brew with extract and I'm aiming for an OG of say 1.050. I need to know roughly how much extract to use.

The density of water at room temp is 1000g/L ( metric scale is based on water 1g/ml)

I know specific gravity is something to do with the density of the wort relative to water but I just can't figure it out- any ideas?

thanks
Matt

Frothy, http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jim.dunlea ... .htmshould start you off.

It explains how to calculate the specific gravity your ingredients will give in a given quantity of water.

Thanks Jim - I keep forgetting that you've got a great site as well as a forum.

There are also a number of calculators already available online. SOme of the better calcs will allow you to formulate a recipe and tell you what the gravity should be.

I personally use BeerTools which I find useful. Not sure how accurate it really is, but to be honest I don't really care. I use it more as a recipe book than anything else :) It is good to know roughly what I am aiming for though!!!
