1.044 by my eye - although remember that the brew isn't going to end up at 1.000 so the ABV % scale in the last picture wont be accurate - it's really designed for wines which ferment to dryness.

Assuming you get to the beer average FG of around 1.010, then your brew will weigh in at a fair 4.5% abv

You'll find this a useful tool for calculating ABV : http://www.rooftopbrew.net/abv_calculator.php

Is your hydrometer calibrated for readings to be taken from the top or bottom of the meniscus?

I haven't got a clue, I bought it from a home brew shop new just over a year ago, so I take it it's ok

It will almost certainly be from the bottom of the meniscus. The temperature at which you took the sample could have an effect. Your hydrometer is most likely calibrated to 20C. Check it! Stick it in water at 20C and see if it reads 1.000.

I'd also take a stab at 1.044 from here. You're going to get about 1% alcohol for every 7.4 points it drops and another 0.2% ABV from typical ale priming. Extremely ball park, but that give you an idea. Pump it all into an online ABV calculator when you have a final OG and you'll see. Best of luck.

Absolutely, but they're rare. I'm taking a guess. Test in water at 20C and take it from there. Check instructions if present or googleable!
