Im thinking of a recipe for my first extract and have been looking at a recipe from M Ollosson book – SAS. Only a few minor tweeks but im on a quest for an everards tiger type beer and below are some starter ideas from another thread. As its my first extract brew would you have a look and see what you think..
3750grms Malt Extract (2 tins of light malt extract?)
325grms Crystal Malt
Fuggles Hops 75grms (start of boil)
Golding Hops 15grms (last 15mins)
Irish Moss 5grms (last 15mins)
Golding hops 8grms (dry hops in cask)
Boil time 2 hours
18l in Boil
23l batch length
OG 1048
ABV 5%
Some info from a while ago for tiger.
"Marris Otter pale Malt and crystal malt (88%),
torrified wheat and wheat syrup.
26 Units of colour.
Challenger and Fuggles for bitterness,
Goldings for aroma; hop pellets; dry hopped.
26 Units of bitterness.
I want to get challenger into the mix for bitterness, can I just replace half the fuggles hops in the initial boil with challenger (im unsure if the acid content would affect doing this)?
Do you add the extract and boiled(?) crystal malt to boiling water or bring the lot too the boil?
What is 80l in boil and 23l batch length
Hope you can help

Help with first extract recipe
hey chris you still lookign for that tiger mix hey?
That SAS recipe seems like a good starter for ten.
Why not replace the goldiings in the boil for the challenger making sure that you calcualte the right ibus for the difference in the alpha acids between the two hops.
It might be best to steep the crystal first, drain off the liquid and then boil the extract and liquid together.
I cant imagine thought that your really going to know if its like a tiger unless you make it!!! Get on and brew and let us know how its turned out!!
