AHA homebrewer of the year

He did it with an extract batch.

Just goes to prove that we do not have to go AG.

That said a) it was an American lager, b) he used a yeast starter (rather than dry yeast)
Fermenting: Belgian Blond
Conditioning: None
Drinking: Partigyled IDSP & PP, Single hopped APA, Banks's 1953 Mild, (extract) Single hop pale ale, London Porter, Thai spiced Saison, SMASH Keeping Ale (Chevallier, First Gold, Voss Kveik), Dunkelweizen, Hazelweiss, Amarillo dry hop lager

It looks like he was lucky with his tap water too, although impressive he won with a fairly low alcohol beer.

The only extract gold medal winner this year was this one.

He built up his starter from dry yeast.

Most folks would advise that a starter is not required when using dried yeast...just pitch two packets.

Just goes to show....there is no "wrong" way.....or perhaps more accurately....there are many ways that will work.
