Recipe formulation

Post by RichardG » Sun Nov 23, 2008 1:13 pm

Good day one and all,

I'm after some advice, or pointing to the right section of the forum. I'm looking to start extract brewing (AG may come when I have the time (3 kids in tow!), and the readies to buy the kit). I've started to consider recipes and have looked at those available via the forum. I understand that a certain amount of extract and grains will give me a certain number of gravity points, and that hops will provide 'bitterness' measured in IBU's and that later additions add back flavour and / or aroma. My question concerns the balance between the two. Is there a recommended 'balance' range between malt and hops? If so, what? Alternatively, where would I find this on the forum? By the way, how do you work out gravity points from grain additions?

Many thanks in advance for any contributions.

I would suggest downloading the free version of ProMash, I used it from the beginning of my AG expoilts and it really helps. You can change the settings to extract if you wish.
