Advantages and disadvantages of hop bags

Post by RichardG » Tue Feb 10, 2009 12:09 pm

I've just recently started extract brewing (as opposed to kits) and during my first brew found removing the hop crud a real chore. I only have the most basic equipment, including a 3 gal boiling pot, so have been thinking about better, easier ways of getting rid of the crud. Now, my LHBS sells muslin grain bags for 15p each so I have considered getting a load of these to hold the hops. As they're so cheap I'd happily get a lot and split the hops over a number of bags if it's useful. So far, so easy. And that's my concern, is it too easy? Are ther any issues or concerns that I need to be aware of before setting of down this road? Would nylon bags be better?

Reckon I've solved the problem anyway. Managed to get a great big sieve from Lidl for £4.88. Fits nicely in the fermenting bucket, also has extenable handles (though I won't need much of that!). So, I can pour, strain, and aerate at the same time. Hoorah!
