Fermenting brew head
Fermenting brew head
Okay, I've got a brew in the FV which I did last Friday using S-04 yeast. It's sat at 20C and smells great. My query is that, when I checked the day after pitching it had developed a lovely, thick, cream head on it. Great thinks I! Thing is, it's still there! Should I be concerned about this, or is it 'one of those things' that can happen?

Re: Fermenting brew head
That's absolutely fine, dandy and normal.
In a day or two the head will sink back into the beer and fermentation will start to slow down.

Cheers boingy. I'd assumed it was fine, but I've never seen a head last as long as this which is what occassioned the questioned. Thanks for the reassurance.

Re: Fermenting brew head
If the head is still there in April, I probably lied to you.....

Re: Fermenting brew head
Actually boingy (or anyone else for that matter!) I do have a follow up question regarding this. I checked the gravity over the weekend, and it was down to 1.012. So that's fine so far. However, the head hasn't changed in anyway. Now, I'm not concerned about that for now, but I plan to bottle this brew at the end of the week as it'll have been going for two weeks. What should I do about the head then? Should I leave it, or stir it in, or what? Any advice would be most welcome. Cheers!
Re: Fermenting brew head
Leave it and stop draining / syphoning before it gets sucked into the tap / pipe. Stirring it in is definitely going to be bad.
Re: Fermenting brew head
It is quite unusual to have such a large head for so long. If the SG is still decreasing each day you should probably hold off bottling until it has been static for a couple of days.
Either way, as Parva says, don't stir in the head.

Re: Fermenting brew head
Okay guys, many thanks for that. I'll check the gravity a few times over the weekend and see what I get. Either way, I'll ensure I don't siphon the head into the bottles. Cheers!
