Hi, i started my first extract brew a few days ago, i only did a small batch 4.5 litres to see how it went before comiting to a full size batch. it is now in a demijohn and is fermenting well, but my question is about the foam on top i usualy do a 40 pint kit with a small amout of foam but this batch is even coming through the bubbler and there appears to be lumps floating about in the liquid again something i have never seen. any help would be appriciated

Re: my very first extract brew
Sounds okay to me
! The foam probably means it's a vigorous fermentation, the lumps are probably no more than bits of yeast, hot break, hops etc. Leave to run its full course, I'm sure it'll be fine.

Re: my very first extract brew
will the foam that had developed on top of my brew sink, i have done this batch in a demijohn i know this is not ideal but was a trial before i comit to a large batch. because if it doesnt then obviously i will not be able to scim it off before moving the batch into another vessel prior to bottling? so could it be just a case of being very careful with the syphon??
Re: my very first extract brew
It'll probably sink, but if not, as you have said it's a case of being careful with the syphon.
Re: my very first extract brew
fermenting seems to have ceased and im down to target of 1018 with a og of 1080, i have placed into another vessle before bottleing, is it recomended to leave in a couple of days before bottling becouse im worried that all the yeast will settle to the bottom and there will be nothing for the sugar to react with to provide carbonation.
Re: my very first extract brew
Just double checked in my notebook og was 1070 not 1080.
