Recommended extract?

Post by clatters69 » Mon Jun 08, 2009 5:28 pm

Does anyone have any suggestions as to a good tin of pale malt extract? I have followed the threads about Muntons stuck fermentations being attributable to the extract and also that nearly every different brand of kit is ultmately owned by Muntons. Would this apply to tins of LME? Do Brupaks come into this category? Or possibly DME may be better?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You could try Coopers Light malt Extract, its darker than a regular Pale though.

I use spraymalt. It's made by Muntons but I haven't had even the slightest suggestion of a stuck fermentation. No "extract twang" with it either which is always a danger with LME.

+1 Spraymalt from Muntons for me too, always ferment down lovely, and easy to keep.

Thanks chaps. I've never used spraymalt before, so it's time to have a go.

I use spraymalt too. A bit more pricey than LME but I think the results are more consistent - especially if you're not sure of the freshness of the LME.

Having said that... if you want something cheaper then dive into AG brewing

Use spraymalt eh ? Now I'm really tempted to go extract. How much spraymalt would you use in a typical recipe ? and what size pan could you use as an absolute minimum to make 5 gallons ?

As for amounts to use - get hold of a copy of Graham Wheelers Camra brew your own beer book - loads of good recipes in AG format, but also a section on each recipe for converting into extract with grams for either LME or DME (and with a bit of maths, a bit of both if you prefer)

I made my recently bottled Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby in this way (with a can of John Bull LME, and the balance made up with spray using the measurements in the book)
