Best Extract recipe for Summer Brewing/Drinking-Extr. newbie

Hi,

I'm thinking of moving onto extract brews...
Is there any specific recipes that people would reccomend as first brews and suitable for brewing in the summer climate?

I have a:
6l stockpot
Hop/grain bag
Pale Malt (crushed grain)
Crystal MAlt "" ""
Goldings Hops
Fuggles Hops
Styrian Hops
Saaz Hops (previously added to lager kits with some success :))
MO malt extract (x2)
brupacks Premium Pale Malt extract

25L FV, Pressure barrel, bottling bucket
Plus all the usuall equipment required for kit brewing....

I'm thinking maybe an IPA or something suitable for a summer session/ BBQ...

Look forward to hearing your suggestions...

:)

If you're making an IPA you'll probably want something with a high AA %age for your bittering hops and you'll want to keep the fermentation temperature down too.

This item is for all grain, full mashed beers... Not Extract.
Do you have a Mash Tun too?

Well, considering I'm so impressed with my new extract brew (based on Graham Wheeler recipe of Cameron Strongarm) - I will link to that thread - it's light, summery, fruity, flowery, not massive on alcohol, so quaffable, and easy to make.

You'll note some early worry from me on the look of the brew, but I put that down to the elder - it looks great now, smells divine. Can't wait to tuck into it.

Hi

OSB
When you say cool fermentation temp do you mean in the range 18-20C ?
And by High Alpha acids do you mean higher than the 4-6% styrians I have (?) If so what would you reccomend?

PDTNC
I have some 'grains' to add to the extract brew as in some of the recipes on this part of the forum and on the adapted kit recipes thread...
Apparently doing a 'mini' mash and then boiling up the resulting 'wort' with the hops adds flavour to an extract brew... (?)

I've see n the Clive of India Pale ale and fancied that... Any one tried this brew?

Many thanks!

Guy

Yes.

Varieties such as Challenger, Northdown and Target seem to be the most commonly used ones for bittering IPAs.

Hi,

By way of an update I did my first extract brew yesterday!

Daab's Simple recipe...

Everything went well and now I have an FV full of a bubbling foaming mass so all appears to be going well!

I wont be able to transfer it to another FV until 10 days after fermentation started... will this be an issue?

Many thanks!

After 10 days it should be ready for bottling or kegging so I don't understand why you'd want to transfer it another FV unless you're mixing in priming sugar prior to bottling.

Ok,
Thaks OSB, my mistake it turns out...

Thats what i thought... it turns out i'd miss read the recipe... One that i'd previously read suggested moving it to another FV after 5 days then dry hopping with 'X' then bottling...

I'll keg this one after the 10days then... I cant wait to try it! :) I'm hoping it will turn out as a Pale Ale/IPA type beer...
Colour wise it looks quite golden similar to an IPA... Time will tell I guess... :)

Would it be worth conditioning in the keg for 10-14 days prior to bottling?
I am aware that some forum users who do AG, prefer to do this... Is it just a matter of personal choice and the way you like your beer?

Many thanks!

Guy

I think leaving it for a few extra days before bottling is a good idea as it'll allow a lot of the yeast to settle out resulting in less sediment in the bottles. 14 days sounds good.

Can be used for a partial mash
