First batch: Boil kettle capacity question

Post by crowds » Wed Jul 08, 2009 3:53 pm

I will be picking up the bulk of my kit at the start of next week.
However I already ordered a few things from ebay.

One of these things was a stock pot (I plan to boil the wort on the stove and maybe move to a dedicated boiler later).
It arrived yesterday and I could tell straight away it would not hold anywhere near the amount of liquid needed.
I quickly checked the auction and realised I had made a mistake :(
It has a capacity of just 6 ltr !

I will be looking for a replacement as soon as possible but with a holiday coming up asap = 2 months :(

So I would like to get some opinions on what i feel my options are (or indeed offer me alternate options).

I do have another Stainless steel pot and between the two I could get 10ltrs.
Would it be viable to split the ingridients between the 2 pans and still aim for a 5 gallon run ? (obviously the fermenting bucket will need toping up to make the amounts)

Would it be better to half the recipe and make 2.5 gallon ?
And if so will it still condition ok in the barrel and create the pressure ?

Or maybe I could put all the ingriedients for 5 gallons in the one pan and top that up ?

I realise there is another option I am ommiting and that would be to wait till I can get a bigger pot, but Im sure you understand the itch to get cracking :)

Cheers

If you're using spraymalt for the bulk of your fermentables then a 5 gallon batch is doable with your pot.

Not sure if you've already considered this, but an electric boiler is ridiculously cheap and easy to make. Most of us on here use them. Less mess too. You don't have to worry about cleaning up the cooker!

Here are a few links:

There will be more than these. Also, if you need help and advice the forum members will offer you loads.

Thanks for the replies.

@ Floydmeddler , Yes I have looked at both of those posts :) I think i will want to move over to a dedicated boiler at some stage. In fact I was looking at some of the cheap kettles in Tesco's today.

@OldSpeckledBadger, I was thinking about lme but if it's doable with spray malts then ill go with them ! I was going to go with something like the stock ale recipe thats on the Beer Engine which is about 80% pale malt 3% crystal malt with the rest being sugar.
Although I was thinking of lowering the og a bit :)

IMHO spraymalt is easier. Put 500g in the boiler with the hops and add the rest post-boil.

That should stop you falling over repeatedly ;) You might like to try making a 10 litre batch using roughly the method I describe in this thread:
