first brew low OG

Post by DanO » Fri Jul 17, 2009 6:29 pm

Hello, have just made my first brew ingridients were

1.8kg Light LME
250g cyrstal malt
80g black malt

30g fuggles
10g goldings

5g goldings to finish and 1/2 tsp of irish moss.

i then added this 1.5 gallons to 3.5 gallons of water making 5 gallons, partly followed recipies out of books etc.

The OG was only 1029, did i need to add more LME or DME to raise this? .....is my first beer going to be weak and horrible?

1.8 Kg isn't really enough for a 5-gallon brew. For the weakest beer I brew (3.6%) I use 2Kg DME, 225g crystal malt and 200g sugar. Your beer will probably still taste nice though :)
Best wishes

agreed - that is low on fermentables for 5 gallons. Lowest I've gone is 2.5kg equivalent of either DME or LME

Hi Dano,

I went from kits to AG so never bothered with extract. All I can add is that of the many kits I did, I had a minimum of a 1.8Kg 1-can kit plus 1Kg beer enhancer for 5 gallons. The best kits were the 3.6Kg 2-can muntons midas gold kits. I guess I'm saying you're well short of fermentables for five gallons :(
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget
