First extract brew

Post by crafty john » Tue Oct 20, 2009 12:54 pm

I thought it was about tme i did my first extract brew so here goes.

2 340 gram jars raymers clssic malt extract
500 gram medium spraymalt
40 grams styrian goldings
yeast & nutrient

I only have a jam pan so i put 5 litres of boiling water in it, added the malt, when it was dissolved I adden all but 13 grams of the hops and set it off on a rolling boil for 1 hour, I will add the rest of the hops 5 minutes from the end then I will strain into a 10 litre FV and top up to just over 2 gallons with cold water, wait for it to cool, check sg and add dextrose if needed.

What do you guys think :?:

All that malt in 5 litres will have resulted in a poor hop utilisation. Beer Engine tells me that you'll end up with 26 EBU. You'd have been better saving the spraymalt til after the boil. Then you'd have got an EBU of about 36.
Best wishes

Thanks for that, I'm new to all this. What does EBU stand for :?: and will it affect the flavour too much :?: I will save the spraymalt til after the boil next time. I will put my mistake down to experiance

EBU (also sometimes called IBU) is the measure of the bitterness. Most bitters have an EBU in the 30s. Your beer will be closer to a mild in bitterness.

I don't mind drinking mild :^o but I was after a bitter, never mind I will learn from this one and next time add the spraymalt after the boil.

Thanks again

You where spot on it does taste like a mild, I am quite pleasantly surprised at how good it tastes even at this early stage. a few weeks conditioning and it will be very drinkable :D I think I've got the bug

I am going to do this recipe again tomorrow but with light spraymalt instead, I will follow your advice oldspeckledbadger regarding adding the spraymalt after the boil. I also have a jar of molasses, I was thinking of adding some, however I don't want to over do it. What would be a good amount to add :?: would I add it after the boil or before :?: Or would molasses be a bad idea :?: I have a 12 litre stock pot now so I could use a gallon of liquor in the boil :) Come on we all have to start somewhere

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys

Molasses seems to be used more in darker beers. It's basically a sugar so adding too much would result in a thinner beer so maybe err on the side of caution and keep it down to about 10% of the fermetables.
