AG alcohol volume

Post by trickybrew » Wed Mar 10, 2010 11:26 pm

Hi all :) I'd like to find out how to increase the alcohol volume in me AG ale, if it's the sugar or the grain I have to increase, what volume increase do I have to add to go up 1% alcohol at a time #-o .
Thanks

The easiest (and cheapest) way is to add sugar. If you're making about 40 pints, then a kilo of sugar will add about 1.5% to the alcohol content. But I'd have to ask, why? When you've got so much to drink its better to make it tastier than strong...

Thanks for that but i'm only making 19 liters will the same go for the plus 1.5% sugar, it's just good to no so if i do find a brew i want to brew a few times but it's just a bit under the alcohol volume for me i can add 2% or so next time, as i say just good to no how.
Thanks

About 850g of extra pale malt should give you a 1% ABV increase (well it would with the calculations for my system!)

Could also get a small boost (although also change the beer profile) by:

1. Mashing cooler for a more fermentable wort

2. Using a more attenuative yeast

3. Reducing your final volume for the same amount of grain (boil less or boil longer)

You don't mash extract brews!

Indeed you don't, but to quote the OP, "...I'd like to find out haw to increase the alcohol volume in me AG ale, if it's the sugar or the grain ?..."
