Thinking of moving to Extract - learning how..

Post by sladeywadey » Fri Mar 19, 2010 2:23 am

Guys,

thinking of moving up to Extract brewing and am starting to learn the process.

Is it possible to take an AG recipe and convert to extract or am I barking up the wrong tree?

For example, how would I do the following in extract-land? Would I steep the grains or get an existing wheat extract kit can? Cheers.

Schneider Weisse

grain bill:

Wheat Malt 4Kg
Lager Malt 1Kg
Vienna Malt 1Kg
Caramunich Malt 360g
Oat Husks 100g?

90 Minute boil
Hallertau hops 25g

15 minute
Hallertau hops 10g

Mash 50oC for 20 minutes
65oC for 50 minutes

I'd look at some simpler AG recipes for bitter.

Simply substitute malt extract for the pale malt that would go into the mash. Many recipes call for 4 or 5kg pale malt in the mash. So, you'll get the equivalent goodness from say 1.5kg LME plus 500g to 1kg DME plus maybe 500g soft brown sugar (or just use 2 tins LME). Start by steeping any speciality grains (crystal, black, chocolate etc) for 30 mins at 70 celsius, get your boil going and your extract in, add your full kettle hops, late hops, cool and pitch yeast.

This is the stage I'm at, learning the ropes of different grains and hops. I'm set for AG and waiting for my mash tun to arrive. I bought it from a nice chap on here, but it's still sat in my father-in-law's garage 200 miles away as a late birthday present. Grrr!

that's very helpful thanks guys. I am going to make a 33l boiler out of a FV/tesco cheapo kettles this weekend and maybe get a brew underway with one of the recipes on here.

Looks like I need to consider buying those books. I would be particularly interested to see if I could make a TT Landlord clone..

OK thanks - will try and pick up a copy from LHBS later.

So is the TT Landlord an AG only or is it possible with Extract?

I'm thinking I will move to AG later this year when I will have more time/money but get some of the basics under my belt now with Extract brewing..

I'll answer my own question now I've got Graham Wheeler's book - A TT Landlord brew of sorts is available for extract brewing.. excellent.

Guys, going to be doing a GW Landlord clone tomorrow (extract) - I have Windsor, Nottingham and S04 yeasts to choose from. Which one is recommended for this Landlord clone?

Cheers
