Hi all
I have just done a 10 litre extract brew, I usually use 900 gram LME and 500grams spraymalt but I poured a kilo of spraymalt in instead by accident

Will it affect my hop utilisation

wil it affect the flavour
Cheers guys

will have a bit more alcohol content

and possibly a bit more of that tangy twang that is characteristiv of too much spraymalt

however there may just be enough lme to balance this out

It will taste more malty and less bitter!
You better up the hops if you want to keep the balance as intended
by 10-20% should do it

Too late to up the hops, the boil is finished

I used 15 grams EKG and 15 grams Challenger in the boil and 20 grams challenger aroma hops 40 minute steep. I suppose it will be more like a mild than a bitter.

Tangy twang from too much spraymalt? I've never heard of that before, are you sure you don't mean sugar or brewers sugar?

That one puzzled me too - I have heard of (and witnessed

) the homebrew kit 'twang' but never from adding too much spraymalt to an extract brew.

It's either too much white sugars or possibly too much "old" liquid malt, but never too much spraymalt.

You never know, it might turn out to be your best brew yet

- keep us posted.
I think with an OG that high it may need a few extra weeks maturing.

If your after a bitter make a small quantity of hops up in a hop tea and poor it into the FV. You'll need some form of spreadsheet/ calculator to work amounts out though.

Hop tea will do the job, as will dry hopping, just drop an ounce into the FV, or even dry hop the keg, if you want a more bitter taste. It should be a good extra special bitter, whatever you do.

I was under the impression that you have to boil hops to extract the bitterness and late or dry hopping only gives aroma
