American Pale Ale Dry Hop Suggestions?

Post by tommywalls » Fri Jul 03, 2015 11:08 am

Hi
I have just received the Discover Pale Ale Extract kit from www.thehomebrewcompany.ie. This contains 3kg LME + Warrior,Cascade & Columbus hops, Safale US05 yeast + whirlfloc tablet (£19.88 delivered!).
The hop packets are not labelled with varieties just boil times-60mins 10 mins & 0mins. I want to dry hop this after initial fermentation, does anyone have any suggestions on a suitable hop?
Also has anyone else done this kit -what were the results?

You'll not go wrong with Simcoe or Mosaic IMO.

Or even dry hop with Columbus as it's already in the mix. Fantastic multi purpose hop!

I was considering Cascade as that was already present. Any advice on whole leaf or pellet for the dry hop?

Pellet. Cascade will be fine but I prefer Columbus.

Rub them in your hands and then smell them, try different combinations and choose the ones you like the most, i would try cascade + columbus. I really like columbus in dry hopping

Let us know how you get on with the kit. Just bought a dry stout kit from them and was disappointd it was all thrown in together so I can't get to the instructions without exposing the malt

How come you're disappointed before opening it?

Disappointed I couldn't read the instructions. All the malt is crushed in a bag alongside a sealed bag with yeast, instructions etc

Can't go wrong with Cascade in a US IPA .
And they wonder why we drink ...

Thanks for the suggestions- I have opted for Cascade, thinking of 50g after initial ferment has died down-does this sound about right. I brewed yesterday which was fine, although it took most of the day to get the temperature down enough to pitch the yeast. Smelt good although colour was much darker than expected. OG of 1050 topped up to approx. 21 litres.
With regard to leon103 comments the kit was all together in one bag with lose grains-but this didn't bother me-the instructions were fairly basic anyway- better off looking through the forum for advice. It was a very competitive price for a kit with LME, Grains, Hops and Yeast & delivered from ROI for under 20 quid!
I will update when further on in the brew

I have a few of their kits waiting to be brewed. Drinking the Irish Red, and have the discover america and extra stout. I agree it would be helpful if it were labelled as to what hops are going in at the different times and in what quantities if they are mixed? Great kits for starting to break into extract brewing none the less, just a little more info, and I could learn alot from it if nothing else and feel abit more free to play.

I have not experimented much with dry hopping but can confirm you can't go wrong with cascade in a pale ale. I read that leaf hops are higher in the oils or whatever you want for dry hopping but pellets release it much better making them better (or need to use less for the same effect).

The company are excellent at communicating. I have emailed them a few times and Shane always gets back to me even if I email him at 22.00 hours.

A quick update-dry hopped with a full 100g of cascade last night -in for a penny and all that. Smelling good and hoping to bottle at the end of the week!

Bit late on this one....I put the hops into the boil then dry hopped with Chinook.. Turned out really rather good. I'm sure the Cascade will be awesome too.
