Crystal Clear
Hi everyone I have just come over to the dark side from brewing kits. My question, all my kit beers came out crystal clear, I have now completed 3 BIAB AG brews with quite good results but although my bottled beer has cleared it has never been crystal clear as in shop bought beer. Is this what you would expect or could I be doing somthing wrong?
All my brews are from GW's book.

Re: Crystal Clear
Are you using Irish moss/Whilfloc during the last 15min of the boil?
Re: Crystal Clear
There are factors during the brewing process and in the storage of the beer which can affect the clarity . How long are you leaving the beer before drinking it? Also is it in bottles or kegged?
Re: Crystal Clear
Thanks for your help. I am using Irish Moss as recipe and the one I tried last night was about two months old (Specled Hen) not a bad drink just concerned about the clarity.
Re: Crystal Clear
I remember reading somewhere on the AG forum a long time ago that people thought that whirlfloc was better than Irish Moss. I tried to search the thread again but couldnt find it. But it might be worth a go.eugene.harris wrote:Thanks for your help. Re: Crystal Clear
I BIABed for about a year with no Irish Moss / Whirlfloc and got pretty cloudy beers. I figured it was either due BIAB or my technique. However, I recently tried Koppafloc (same as Whirlfloc, I think, but in a powder not a tablet) and half a teaspoon in a 23l batch has seen my beers really clear.

Half a teaspoon of Protofloc in 23 litres and my beers are as clear as a really clear thing.
I buy from The Malt Miller

Re: Crystal Clear
There's a compound of caragheenan (irish moss) and polyclar (PVPP) that you can get now. In Australia it's called Brewbrite and I did read here somewhere that there's a similar product in the UK. You mix it to a runny paste and add it to the kettle where it flocs out the hot break, and also flocs out the polyphenols that could go on cause chill haze. I've been using it for a couple of years and produce crystal clear beers - I keg BTW.
Here's one, sitting next to a glass of Henninger. I think mine's the one on the right from memory
