Maxi BIAB

Post by Goulders » Fri Dec 23, 2011 2:22 pm

I know some use this method for small pots to make bigger batches, but has anyone used this method for a 40l urn, to say get 50l batch rather than 23l?

I know the BIABrewer website has people who have done this, although calculations can be a bit of guesswork apparently. Also my efficiency is only around 68-70%, so maybe I should sort my efficiencies and water treatment first. Quite fancy having a go in the New Year though.

Happy Christmas one and all!

Hey there Goulders, recently I've been using a 36L Beerbelly stockpot to do a MaxiBIAB double batch aiming for 2 * 23L of 1.050, only I no- chill cubed the concentrated wort into a pair of the smaller 15L jobbies rather than cool in- situ as per my standard method for Maxi. While it worked quite well numerically with the desired high- 70s efficiency, the beer wasn't overly fabulous but that was largely my own fault for experimenting with the recipe a little too adventurously, also used two separate smaller BIAB bags which was a PITA and I'll never do that again. The second go at this was pretty much the same but in a single bag, no drama at all.
Probably good if you can sort the efficiency issue and water out, what I recommend with that is to ensure there's adequate calcium in the mash first, then look at other tweaks. You're getting around 70% so things aren't too bad, may well improve with Maxi. With the calculations, it is important to keep in mind that MaxiBIAB is geared around a limited mash tun volume, if that's not the case then use stock BIAB, however in your case with the double it should be follow that. There's a very useful spreadsheet- based calculator available from BIABrewer (for members to download) which will make life easier in the beginning, it works for Maxi as well.
Give it a whirl though, you should be able to manage it without too much hassle, so good luck! :=P
