First BIAB - Advice please!

Post by nate89 » Wed Apr 27, 2011 1:11 pm

Hi All,

Hoping to do my first BIAB either today or tomorrow, and have some questions.

I found a recipe for a Sierra Nevada style Porter (19 litres);

Mash (90 mins)
3400g Pale Ale Malt
225g Chocolate Malt
225g Crystal Malt
110g Black Patent Malt

Boil (60 mins)
20g Nugget Hops @ 60 mins
15g Willimette @ 40 mins
15g Willimette @ 20 mins

American Dry Ale Yeast

Ive got all the ingredients, however, im not sure how much water to use etc - Any ideas? Also, im looking to make only 10 litres (about half) - do i just half the ingredients and amount of water used or do the mash and boil times needs adjusting too?

Thanks

Halving the ingredients is fine for that sort of grain bill.

If its your first go, I'd suggest adjusting your brewhouse efficiency to something like 70%. I would guess the original was based on 75-80%. Best advise to begin with would be to drop your recipe into brewmate (great free brewtool) as if you were making it to 19l then scale it back using the software.

Take your time, make notes and have fun!

I brewed that recipe on my second attempt at BIAB and it turned out great.
I use Brewmate to work everything out. It has a BIAB setting. The Brewday feature calculates what water you need.

Thanks for the Brewmate tip - very helpful.

Brew has been done, fermenting now - hopefully will turn out well.

I realise this is an old post but how did this turn out?

I have the ingredients and planning on doing this soon (BIAB as well). It was a friends favourite tipple when he was in the US for a couple for years.

Thanks
