A Boiling question?

Post by Monkeybrew » Sat Jan 28, 2012 10:13 am

I am planning BIAB #2, and bearing in mind that I am currently only using an 11L stockpot for 6-7L micro batches, does boiling for 90 mins with the lid off boil away alot of hop flavours?

Do other's boil for 90 mins with the lid off for the whole boil or only part of it?

I only boil for 60 minutes for a start.

I boil with the lid off to let the DMS escape, Add some hops later to counteract the loss of hop flavour.

Cheers for the reply Steve :)

All of GW's recipes state a 90min boil, but I assume a 60min boil is still long enough to extract bitterness?

At what point do you add extra hops to counteract the loss?

I leave the lid on until just before the boil, it keeps the heat in and reduces the time that it takes getting to the boil, if you leave it on when it starts boiling it will most likely boil over, this is messy and wasteful. I'm still boiling for 90 mins, it's only 30 mins after all which is not much in the great scheme of things. (if someone want to tell me how much that costs in household gas I may change my mind).
