anyone smart out there..

Post by timbo41 » Mon Nov 26, 2012 7:48 pm

My brain works funny..anyone who's seen my post will agree. I get silly ideas and here's another... :D
I'm currently putting my plastic boiler together, trying to incorporate all the good ideas I've seen on forum. I want a false bottom,to supplement my hop filter and support my grain bag away from elements. So I thought instead of standing bottom on stainless pegs as most posts suggest, why not reverse it. Think chip fryer basket, fine mesh, with maybe 4 rods supporting mesh suspended from rim of bucket. Should help with removing bag, then could be reinserted as a hop filter, again making it easy to remove spent hops after liquor run off. Not a materials expert so don't know what type of meshy stuff could be used....comment/ pisstake/ advice welcome.
edit. My dodgy brain keeps saying just bag hops as well, but I note a lot of people like them loose in boiler hence above, also chicken wire type mesh so can be tightly moulded to boiler walls and set in place before filling with liquor
Just like trying new ideas!

Sounds like it could work. Only concern I'd have it the added weight on the sides of your plastic vessel. I'm sure it all depends on the type and thickness of your plastic, but some people have described their plastic "boil kettles" softening somewhat at high temperatures. The recommended internal struts put no added downward pressure on the already potentially weakened walls.

Can;t imagine you'd get a mesh fine enough and strong enough for the job?

Re: the hop socks- Remember that the hops help filter the wort when doing your final runoff, if you have a tap of course;)
