Hi all,
Since I've just joined the JBK forum, I wanted to ask for some advice / feedback on my next BIAB - a Hobgoblin clone. Not my favourite of beers, but I want to make something that my non-hophead friends would like. I have cobbled the recipe together from various sources found here and around the web (CYBI and Orfy's, mainly). I am shooting for the bottle strength version, not cask. probably going to no-chill, too. Anyway, here's my recipe - the Styrians that I bought from the Malt Miller are only 2.88% AA, hence the higher hop bill than you would expect:
23L brew length
4.6 kg Maris Otter
0.25 kg pale crystal
0.20 kg carapils
0.15 kg chocolate malt
FWH 25g Fuggles (4.5% AA)
FWH 25g Styrian Goldings (2.88% AA)
15 mins 25g Fuggles
15 mins 25g Styrian Goldings
Flameout 50g Styrian Goldings
Yeast: Thames Valley Yeast 1275
OG 1.052
FG 1.013
32 EBC
30.1 IBU
Planning to start with 30L in the brewpot before adding grain.
Does this sound about right?
Cheers
Rob
Hobgoblin BIAB recipe feedback
Re: Hobgoblin BIAB recipe feedback
That looks pretty good Rob.
A friend of mine who is an occasional brewer has chosen something similar for his next brewday where he will be coming over to use my equipment.
Here is the recipe that I put together using Brewmate. It is based on Orfy's clone but I replaced the Styrians with Willamette, added a bit of aromatic and will be using WLP005.
Original Gravity (OG): 1.048 (°P): 11.9
Final Gravity (FG): 1.014 (°P): 3.6
Alcohol (ABV): 4.40 %
Colour (SRM): 15.1 (EBC): 29.7
Bitterness (IBU): 32.6 (Tinseth)
86.49% Pale Malt
4.5% Crystal 60
3.6% Carapils (Dextrine)
2.7% Aromatic Malt
2.7% Chocolate
15g Fuggles (5.2% Alpha) @ 60 Minutes (First Wort)
15g Willamette (6.3% Alpha) @ 60 Minutes (First Wort)
15g Fuggles (5.2% Alpha) @ 30 Minutes (Boil)
15g Willamette (6.3% Alpha) @ 30 Minutes (Boil)
15g Fuggles (5.2% Alpha) @ 0 Minutes (Aroma)
15g Willamette (6.3% Alpha) @ 0 Minutes (Aroma)
Single step Infusion at 68°C for 60 Minutes. Boil for 60 Minutes
Fermented at 18°C with WLP005 - British Ale
The software tells me that I will need about 35l of water to get 23l of wort into the FV based on my equipment - Your Mileage May Vary....

Re: Hobgoblin BIAB recipe feedback
Thanks Jimp2003. Your recipe does look very similar. Are Williamette a fuggle strain, do you know?
Never used aromatic myself - maybe this is a daft question, but what does it add to a grain bill such as this?
Also, any idea how I would adjust my hop schedule for no-chill? I've read so much conflicting advise that I'm nervous to try it.
Cheers
Rob

I would agree with these amounts for BIAB.jimp2003 wrote:The software tells me that I will need about 35l of water to get 23l of wort into the FV based on my equipment - Your Mileage May Vary....
I did a brew for 25l of wort at the weekend and I started with 38l, but that was to allow for a 30 minute boil of the water the night before, in the FV at the end it doesn't look too far off 25l, maybe very slightly under.
Recipe looks good though

Willamette does have fuggles parentage and is mentioned HERE as a good sub for styrian goldings which I should really be using.
Its my first time trying aromatic but as the name suggests it should add a bit of extra malt aroma.
Not sure about no-chill and hop schedule as I always use an immersion chiller.
Good luck with the brew!
Re: Hobgoblin BIAB recipe feedback
Your recipe looks off to me,
#here is the exact recipe from listening to the brewer talk to the Jamil Show, Can you brew it.
Pale Malt - 90%
Crystal - 7.5%
Chocolate Malt - 2%
Dextrose - 0.5%
IBU's of 36.3
for a 6 gallon batch they said
14g EKG - 60 min
14g Fuggles 60 min
16g Cascade 15min
64g Styrian Goldings 15min
English Ale yeast
Have fun.

Re: Hobgoblin BIAB recipe feedback
Maybe worth mentioning that will be US gallons, as it's an American show.
