Max grain in 19L pot for mini BIAB?

Post by Jocky » Fri Jan 25, 2013 7:46 pm

I've been extract brewing for a bit in small batches on the stove and thinking about shifting up to BIAB to make use of some of the more interesting grains.

I was just wondering how much grain you can BIAB mash realistically in a 19L pot? The max I would want to boil is 9L.

I know that I probably shouldn't be lazy and should work this out with the BIAB calculator spreadsheet, but I wondered if some kindly soul already knew the answer to this?

I quite regularly start my boil with about 12 litres in my pot, also 19lt

I only make batches that are 8 litres into the FV, so I'm not too worried about volume, it's more about what gravity I can achieve with a 19L pot using all grain.

For most recipes I can do a partial mash and up the gravity with late extract additions, but there's a couple of recipes I have that simply can't be done that way (e.g. Pilsner or wheat malt heavy recipes), so wondering if they are possible by BIAB in my bigger pot.

The strongest beer that I've done was a J W Lees, Moonraker clone that came to around 8% at 7 litres using 2800g of grain, this had a water volume (mash) of 13lt and I sparged with 5.5 lt

I have a 21 litre pot, which I use to boil 20 litres. I mash with 16 litres and have managed to use 4.5kg of grain. It was quite thick :)

Good good. Figure I can do up to 3.5kg, but going to work out all my volume measurements next extract brew, and that should give me a more exact figure.

I've got a 19L pot and use BrewMate to calculate the amount of grain and water required for target OG. I find it pretty accurate so far - e.g. on my last few brews it's calculated the total mash volume at around 18.8L, and right enough, when I fill up the pot it's right to the brim. It doesn't cost anything so worth a go if you don't already having brewing software. Also I find the water dilution calculator useful if you're planning to liquor back, maxi-BIAB style.
