New to BIAB help please

Post by Simo72 » Thu Oct 11, 2012 9:17 pm

Hi all
I have done quite a few kits now but am itching to move things along brewing wise, I have managed to borrow a 19 litre tea urn and think this will be ok for BIAB. Now obviously I can't do a full boil brew 23l so do i just use a full brew recipe and then dilute to 23 litre with frozen water to help the cooling or would it be better to just do a smaller batch and boil it all and finish with say 15 litres.
I havn't got access to brewing software at the mo as laptop is broke so any recipe advice would be much appreciated, I like a nice pale ale generally with good amount of aroma.
Many thanks in advance

when you say 'borrow' i assume the person who owns it dosent ever want to use it to make tea again?

I've just ordered an all grain kit from Worcester hop shop (exmoor gold) as i thought this would be the easiest way to get started. Just gonna boil as much as i can and keep topping up the boiler with sparge wort and then maybe back liquor to an appropriate SG and hopefully it turns out ok.

Cheers mate, the kit i have ordered is for normal all grain brewing and since i am doing it BIAB i expect lower efficiencies but still want the hoppiness, will i have to do anything in this regard?

1st of all there is no reason that you will get lower efficiencies using the Biab method. You efficiency into kettle should easly be 80% with a recipe like Exmoor gold and possibly more. Graham Wheelers recipe's are calculated with an efficiency of 75% so you will have a bit of leeway. As your kettle is only 19L and your recipe kit is for 23L you will have to maxi biab. Check out this guide Here. The guy who wrote it is a member here on Jims.

Well have finally done this yesterday and after a few hiccups like not having a big enough colander which fell in the fermenter and the tap on my boiler clogging up with hops so i had to siphon with a little hop bag on te end
. so i am a little worried about infection getting in!!!!!. However it was simpler than i expected the mash went well and so did the boil and ended up with 12 ltres of wort which i diluted to 21 litres which gave me the required gravity of 1.045, so reasonably happy at efficiency for first ever time. Anyhow fermentation as started this morning so something must be alright. Fingers crossed for a successful end product
