biab #1 big day wednesday
right folks I'm going in!
BOILER..up and running
HOP FILTER..fitted
BAGS...sewn with a rather nifty back stitch if I do say myself!
going with
3.5kg maris otter
0.25kg cara red
25g brewers gold @60
25g b.g. @15
10g b.g. @0(plug-out!)
Aiming for 20 litres, maxibiab style, adding sparge runnings during boil
ABV and efficiency not that important just now, just want to get a feel for new (to me) way

Good luck for Wednesday bonders.
Give yourself plenty of time and take lots of notes, because if it turns out fantastic, you need to know how you did it.
Good hop choice too, I used Brewers Gold in my 4th BIAB and it's another great one that passes people by.

Re: biab #1 big day wednesday
again cheers guys..made a small start..Gervin yeast starter prepared with a little extract and sugar. Boiler filled to 15 litres with hot straight from tap and half camden added ( sort of hoping boiler will retain a little heat to help in morning) Would have topped right up but don't know how much displacement near on 4 kg grain will cause so erring on caution..i can add liquor but hard to take it out!. Decided to add 200g oatmeal to goods ' cos I had it in cupboard! Have mixed grist together, now sitting in my 15 litre s,s.....I can hear it " come on big boy give me a good mashing tomorrow, you know you wanna". Oh and found two of my kids old thermal body warmers to insulate with.
Bugger xmas, want it to be big brew wednesday NOW
edit just had a thought. Measured current temp, 50°c, then wrapped boiler up. May as well see how my insulation measures up in advance

Re: biab #1 big day wednesday
and it all went surprisingly well! Temp at 0730 was just shy of 30°c which was pleasing. Both elements on got to 65 at 8.10, goods in slowly breaking up any lumps. Temp dropped to 61, good enough,so wrapped up with the addition of two aldi freezer food bags, fit over converted youngs fv nicely. (49p each). Mash for 90 min,no testing kit so longer mash just in case. sparge with 10 litres, volume into boiler 22 litres give or take. Boil a bit scary but had fitted a cut down lid as collar which helped. BIG hot break which i skimmed off but otherwise uneventful.
Cut long stry short and skipping over the few issues, ended up with about 20 litres at 1035 og after temp correftions.pitched about 2 hours ago,a little warm still. Immersion chiler deffo next mission..chilling was a pig thank god its freezing out!!

Been lurking about nick...staying out of contentious debates. Got a bit bored with kits, so thought to try this method, but took a while to scrounge up bits..buggered if I was going to but stuff

Re: biab #1 big day wednesday
it can be fairly cheap, a lot cheaper than a 3 vessel set up, and a lot quicker,
i paid;
76 L stockpot = £36

gas burner = £12

voile £4

no chill cubes £5 each,

all from ebay...
grain and hops per brew £14 approx,
i have my gas ring adapted to natural gas, and connected to the gas supply, so no expensive bottled gas....
