Jims brew along.....

Post by Piscator » Sat Sep 12, 2015 2:27 pm

Hello all, not sure if you all visit the all grain forum but I have started a thread to see if there is interest in having a "brew along" probably towards the end of October/start November - essentially as many people as possible would brew the JBK forum ESB recipe (sticky at the top of the all grain forum) and we'd all post into one brewday thread and see how many gallons of Jims ESB we can make between us. It would be great to have a diverse mix of BIAB and trad AG brewers involved so if you'd be up for it post on the thread so we can see if it's got legs.

Cheers
Steve

EDIT: I've started a poll for dates now so please feel free to vote

A brief update - Rob at The Malt Miller has agreed to make up AG recipe kits for the forum brew for those who are interested..... just drop him a line and he will sort you out.

Thanks Rob for your help.

Cheers

85% Maris Otter,
5% Pale Crystal,
5% Caramalt and
5% Torrefied Wheat
...to make OG 50.

Bittering hops Challenger to 50 IBU ,
15 mins from end Progress (40g),
Flame out EKGs (40g).
Looking at the recipe from the other thread, I have a couple of questions.

Which colour Caramalt?
What IBU's from the Progress?

Are there some base line numbers for the final IBU's and EBC?

Not sure at the moment - just had an email this morning from Rob saying he was happy to get involved with making up the kits. I imagine he'll be able to give us an idea once he's translated the recipe into kg etc.

Cheers

I haven't brewed this yet myself but my take on it as follows:
Caramalt - around 25-30 EBC
IBU's from progress - depends on the hops but guess around 10 IBU in theory... but from my experience a lot of the bitterness from late hops dissipates/mellows during maturation as a lot of it is not coming from isomerised hop oils and is therefore less stable.

These are approx numbers but I would expect about 15 EBC and about 50-60 IBU

TBH I wouldn't worry about making minor tweaks to suit your own tastebuds because we will all end up with slightly different brews anyway as a result of using different yeasts and waters.

If we can agree a date I'd be well up for this.

I'm in but I need to use up the ingredients I allready have so will have to sub the crystal malts with cara-amber and medium crystal. Should make it a bit more chewy I guess. Not the true beer but the hopping and strength will be exactly the same :) It's about 3 ebc more overall

i'll be doing the same, probably 2,5% regular crystal and making up the difference somewhere else. it's in the spirit of diy beer!
dazzled, doused in gin..

Hello Everyone,
Ordered my stuff last night. BIAB, 19Lt pot, 18Lts in the FV.
I was concerned when Monkeybrew told me that the Grains come ready mixed! Too much for my pot! #-o
I phoned MaltMiller today and they will put the grains in different bags for me! I still get the full amounts, but I can scale it back to my needs! :D
MiniBrew with the leftovers! :D
Well done `The MaltMiller`! :D =D>
HaHa! Game On! Here We Go! :D
