Insulation for the outside

Post by Manngold » Sun Apr 02, 2017 7:39 pm

Hi all, a while back I read a post in a similar vein to this. I am basically after a good way to insulate the outside of my kettle, I use electric to heat and someone suggested an inhalation roll from somewhere like Wickes. Does anyone know what I am talking about and can point me in the right direction???

Thanks

bobsbeer

Not sure about wickes, but what about a camping bed roll?

Hi pal. Thanks for the suggestion. I already have that, this seemed like the next step up!

I use hot water tank lagging (red insulation jacket) available from B&Q, Wickes etc (about £10).
I use it with an induction hob and it works well

I use the foil backed stuff that the DIY stores have for putting behind radiators.

The foam is pretty thin but you get 3 or 4 layers around.

I use Thermawrap which i cut and taped round my boiler. During the mash I also cover it with a hot water cylinder jacket.

Closed-cell foam (it sounds like you may already have) is pretty good stuff for lagging. The shiny bubble-wrap has a high specification, but that is on the assumption that there is an air gap behind it and that heat will be reflected back rather than conducted by direct contact. It still does something useful however, and can also make a final layer thats easier to wipe down. Though it is not all made equal; some has a clear plastic coating to protect it, but some is just aluminium foil which can corrode under the effects of wort and water.

when insulating my keg store i did a bit of half arsed googling on the subject, it turns out composite sheet insulation is 'the best' ie most insulation per mm thickness, i then found a site that explored this in about the most fun way http://www.flyingkettle.com/secrun.htm
in conclusion i fitted 5ply mylar bubblewrap insulation within a 9mm void behind the 3mm marine ply wall skin thus enabeling me to maintain both the washing machine and the corny kegs side by side in the 90 cm or so wide area.
ist update for months n months..

I use 18mm armafex (expanded neoprene insulation), with a layer of silver metal insulating tape to make it look pretty.

I've always used rolson floor mats £10 from Halfords. It's good and thick, wipes down easily and looks the part too.

Thanks all. Coffee, do they wrap round the boiler with ease?

They seem quite rigid! Thanks, if they do, this could be a winner.

Yeah they wrap around quite easily. Also interlock and have edging strips too for a nice neat finish. They stink for the first few days, but the smell soon goes.
