BRIB build

Post by brewboy4 » Wed May 06, 2020 11:13 pm

Hi, planning on building a new brib bucket . I have bought the below immersion heater to got to my container . Does anyone have a wire diagram for the element connection. I’m sure it’s live to the right and neutral to the left but want to confirm this. Has anyone used them before ? . The wire I have is a silicone , 3 core, heat rated . Any help on a new container would be great . Hopeing to use plastic

I don't think polarity matters for a heating element?

Polarity between live and neutral wouldn't be an issue regarding the functioning of the heater element, but traditionally it would be wired the following way, in that an electrician would expect the live to be on the right of the female socket as you look at itImage

What kW rating is that? Some that style are very low.

As said, polarity doesn't matter but I'd be surprised if there weren't some small "L", "N" & "E" markings somewhere near those screws - you may need a magnifying glass.

Does not matter for anything AC to function, but live/line MUST be the one switched at a minimum.

The rating is 1.5kw . I knew live wa a middle and I assumed live had to be right or I would have to cross the wires in a standard cable . What do you mean by live /line must be switched at a minimum?

1.5kW is a low rating for an element like this, but it might be enough to get your brew boiling, depending on what volume you're intending to boil.

Careful with the wiring--live is NOT the middle. That's the earth. See Sorcerer's picture above.

'live/line Must be switched at a minimum'. There should be a switch to turn the element on and off. The switch must operate on the live and not the neutral or earth wires. A standard 13 amp switched wall socket does this.

Thanks for this , it’going to be approx 10L batches . So boils should be ok. Yes I’m going to wire as above and have fitted with a 13a plug .

I re wired it to match the pics above . Live is now on the right as you look at it . Neutral is left and earth is central. I just wire the plug as normal now as long as it’s 13a fuse ? Anyone got any recommendations where to buy a locking nut ?

The cord grip should be securing the outer sheath of the cable and not the inner cores, there may be space within the cover, just to push the cable closer to the terminals to allow you to grip the outer sheath Image
