New Mason Aston leaking.

Post by Grainherder » Wed Jun 19, 2024 3:47 pm

Hello all,

I recently acquired a Mason Aston, shipped to me in the States. It performed perfectly for awhile, but then with the last session it started leaking badly. I partially disassembled it to find the leak has nothing to do with the cylinder, but rather the small section of braided hose connecting the pump to the faucet intake is leaking out the top. Feeling around the hose, I did think I might have felt a small pinhole where the clamp might have bit into the hose, though on pulling the hose I can't say I found any concrete evidence of a hole or tear - just a bit where the clamp had dug into the hose (which actually seemed a tad worn, for some reason). I tried tightening the worm clamp more, to no effect.

I pulled the hose and cut a new section of braided hose. I replaced the hose, including the small black plastic sleeve that is wrapped around the faucet inlet and both are inserted into the top of the hose. I should note the black sleeve is cleanly split along its length - I suspect that's what it's supposed to be, and not a cause of the leak. I also used a new worm clamp with a wider band, hoping to avoid cutting into the hose. To no effect, either - continues to leak.

I have contacted Mason and they have been great, so far, but coming up empty. Seems odd I can't simply seal the hose, with proper clamping, and so I'm at a loss.

Anyway else come across this, or otherwise have some thoughts? Many thanks.

It looks like the plastic sleeve is leaking. Can you remove it and clamp directly to the swan neck?
Sommeliers recommend that you swirl a glass of wine and inhale its bouquet before throwing it in the face of your enemy.

Bingo. Thanks trefoyl. It was likely defective and finally cracked completely. It looks like I can't post an image here yet, possibly due to low post count. But you nailed it. Per my earlier comment, the faucet is too small for a 1/2" ID hose, so it appears the sleeve is a necessity. I've contacted Mason and I'm sure they'll send one right out, a pleasure to work with so far.

Thanks again!

Just to put a pin in the thread in case anyone is following, Mason and Cariss in particular has been great to work with throughout - they're sending out a newer style swan neck that doesn't require the plastic sleeve at all, which I think solves the issue. Thanks for the help Trefoyl. I wouldn't hesitate to work with Mason again.
