Ouch. 20 minutes. Faulty gauge then, scary. I believe cornies have a test pressure of 130 psi. That's a lot of pressure. A couple if mine have rupture discs, not safety valves. I always turn the cylinder off after dispensing a beer. Terrible to see good beer go to waste

Ah i see, thanks. It must have really foamed up to do that, but it does sound to have been a very high pressure.
I've had an old regulator do something very similar. Were it not for the PRVs then the keg could have reached the same pressure as the CO2 cylinder - it shows why they are important. In my case the PRVs on the regulator itself operated; I'm a bit surprised it was the corny one that went first here.

The new regulator arrived today (nice bit of kit) and I've installed it.
Instant difference. Set it to about 6psi and it holds. No creeping up, no constantly tweeking. Roll on a decent session so I can test it properly

It started with kits to save money and now look........!!!
Lots of kit, too many ingredients and not enough time, but a patient wife.... who loves my beer...........
