The range the fridge can be set with the internal thermostat is often restricted compared to what it is capable of, both upwards and downwards.
There are lots of people who struggled to get their fridges to near zero or below (it makes lagering MUCH quicker) until they bypassed the built in thermostat.
It depends on the fridge though, eg my main fermenting one will go to about -1C using an external controller and it handily allows me to also go to cellar or higher temperatures at the other end, dependent upon what I need.

... Which means test your fridge with a thermometer before buying and installing stuff you might not need. All fridges are different.
