How much beer left in Cornie Keg?

Post by smbenn » Wed Jun 16, 2021 11:01 am

HI All

How do people calculate how much beer is left in their keg? Have seen calculators which weigh the keg to estimate remaining beer but I guess ABV% and CO2 absorption are also a factor? What techniques/calculators do people use? (Or simply drink it 'till it's gone!)

I have an AEB 19L purchased new from MM which weighs 4.5kg which I shall weigh now.

Cheers

Those two are minute factors, not worth bothering with. 1040 and 1050 beers would be 1% difference in weight. Someone will be along to correct that if I'm way out. :D

Cheers Vacant. So it weighs 14.9Kg - 4.5kg = 10.4kg = 10.4L = 18.3 pints. Anyone agree/disagree?

:( What's in your keg? 10.4 litre if it's water.

10.4 Kg of a 1040 beer is 10 litre

10.4 Kg of a 1050 beer is 10.4/1.0500=9.9 litre i.e. 1% difference.

I just keep a note in my brewing book of how many pints I've poured

Cheers Tom

I've just been on a thread putting down the idea you can easily calculate weight for SG, so I reckon it's expected of me to chip in here?

At this stage we should be talking Final Gravity, not Original Gravity. Say about SG 1.010? SG has no units (its a ratio) and isn't the same as Kilograms per litre, but at about 20°C, from a 20°C/20°C calibrated hydrometer, a litre of beer measured at FG 1.010 will weigh about 1.008Kg. (1.010 * 0.998 = 1.008; 0.998 is the weight in Kgs. of 1L pure water @20°C). :out

But if the weight of a AEG Corny keg is 4.5Kg, I can guarantee the weight difference of different AG Corny kegs will be more than 8g! So you probably are okay to "estimate" the beer is water (1L of which weighs 1Kg ... at 4°C!).

If you approach the problem from this angle, just "roughing it" will be good enough. Anything more accurate and you will disappear up your own bottom in a puff of smoke.

There is a device (American of course) that attaches to the keg a gives a visual sign of how much remains. It works by means of a magnetic float inside the keg. I have a simpler solution. I note the date that I drew the first pint and calculate that it will be empty in at most ten days. After day eight I lift the keg and I know by the weight roughly how much is left.
The most important thing is to always have a full keg ready to connect =D>

This is roughly what I do, I started to weigh every pint I poured for accuracy, but I thought what’s the bloody point just enjoy the beer, when you think you’re close to the end CAREFULLY lift the keg a little to gauge the weight. Obviously if you store your kegs in an adapted fridge or freezer, can only do this with a top opening lid.

Plaato make a keg management system that you can connect to your phone, sings and dances, over the top IMHO. It also costs the price of a new cornie.

Above each of my taps I have two little blackboard stickers (sold for jam jars), one for the beer details and one that I mark a line for each pint. Sometimes I use them and sometimes I don’t bother, it’s useful if using smaller kegs.

Open the fridge door for a few minutes on a warm day and then look at the condensation line that appears

Might get a bit haphazard after the fifth or sixth pint!
