Any demand for malted millet?

A forum to discuss anything related to making gluten-free versions of those brews that would otherwise be off limits to coeliacs.

Just got the courier pricing and its insane for small quantities:
1 Carton @ 5kgs, 40x30x30cms - vol 7.2 kgs - £189.02
2 Cartons @ 10kgs, 40x30x30cms - vol 14.4 kgs - £271.66
3 Cartons @ 15kgs, 40x30x30cms - vol 21.6 kgs - £325.98
4 Cartons @ 20kgs, 40x30x30cms - vol 28.8 kgs - £410.02
So cheaper to fly there and collect it. Or by sea its £490.36 for 500Kg.

Yikes,, Is that to your door by sea, or to the port for collection?
so if you can get 20 folk interested in 25kg batches ,,, or 80 in 5kg... and fancy spending a month or so of free time bagging up and dispatching on.. hmmm perhaps not?
ist update for months n months..

Shame. Looks like importing the ready-malted stuff is off then.
Malting's a tiny bit fiddly, but I'll have another bash. eBay used to have loads of decent millet but I looked recently and didn't find it. Probably missed a vital keyword.
Which variety do people think is going to be best for beer?
In my experiments I used bajra aka pearl millet, from India. I understand pearl is the commonest variety in Africa too.
But panicum/proso may be most easily available in places like eBay.
Or maybe I just go back to the Asian C&C and buy LOTS. It was dirt cheap.

I am experimenting with this stuff http://www.reallywildbirdfood.co.uk/str ... m-5-4-P22/ it says on it not for human consumption but I called them and its just because they don't have what ever they need in place to sell for human consumption.

I have got a custom malting company analysing a sample I sent them to test how well it could malt.

I think there might be a lot of demand for malted millet in the homebrew community. Id love to try some and would use regularly if it made a decent pint. My wife is coeliac.

Clarity ferm is really good stuff too although i dont think it makes gf beer in the pure sense.. more reduced gluten!

Bad news this batch less then 1% germinated so the product I got was not malt-able. I am not giving up yet and will decide how to proceed shortly.

Blimey I got about 80% germination from millet bought from an Asian cash&carry.
Where are they getting theirs? It's a major protein source for several large parts of the world, it shouldn't be hard to get viable stuff!

Some pics from my experiment: http://oldbloke.livejournal.com/798930.html

I used 14oz millet to make a gallon. The gravity came out low so I had to add 9oz of sugar. The final result, after some aging, was pretty good but a bit thin - I'll use 2lb millet (or a kilo if it comes in kilos) per gallon to get more body next time.

I think a flaw in my initial plan is millet sold for food or bird food could be inconsistent on how well it germinates what I need is seed millet which doesn't get grown much in the UK but is common enough in France if anyone out there has any French contacts.
