Have I got a MAJOR problem???

Post by andyjc » Sat Nov 03, 2007 6:26 pm

I brought a Muntons Micro Brewery kit on tuesday, set it all off in the supplied Top Tap King Keg tues PM and all seemed to be OK.
Today, 4 days later have noticed a very slight sticky residue from the tap on the keg. Seems to have only leeked a tiny bit. Have I got a major prob on my hands or is this just down to maybe some excess pressure in the barrel?
This is my first attempt at home brew and maybe I should invest in a fermenting bin for next time.
HELP!!!!! :?

I doubt you've got a major problem but yes, a fermenting bin would be a good investment, certainly.

I'm not familiar with that type of kit, but if the barrel tap isn't airtight you could have a problem with carbonation.

A bit of soapy water (i.e. mixed with a bit of washing up liquid) on a soft brush is good for detecting small gas leaks once pressure has built up a bit, but don't forget to wash it all off before drawing off any beer.

Oh, and yes, a separate fermenter is a good idea.

Cheers Jim. Have researched your site and have found it v.fantastic!
Muntons kit is basically a Woodfordes beer pack, a Top Tap King Keg pressure barrel, tub of VWP and a co2 gas bulb. You mix it all up in the keg and leave for 3/4 weeks. Or so they say!
Will be getting a bin for next brew and will probably be needing your guidance for it.

Ta. :)
