Youngs Cider Kit

Post by Hoppkins » Tue Oct 16, 2007 9:06 am

Made this up for the 1st kit of the season (and possibly my last). My neighbours love cider so i thought i would make one up.

It SAID it should be at 0.90 in 7 days but it took 14 days to get to 0.95-1.000

So i bottled it at that and added a bit less priming sugar. It tasted fair enough, less harsh than Turbo Cider (but no doubt because its way less alchoholic)

I pegged it at 6.5% approx. Got 30 bottles and 2 x 2 litres bottles :)

Going to leave it a month at least.

Tbh i doubt this is much better. But at 7.99 for 35 pints its not bad going still :) I used glucose instead of sugar and the amount of sediment at the bottom of the FV was alarmingly low and it was pretty solid.

I managed to get almost all of the liqour out without disturbing the sediment.

I checked in the 2 litre bottles and there is very little sediment there too and it's suprisingly clear.

Not a bad kit if you ask me for an acceptable tasting cider for cheap.

Not sure if the muntons or more expensive cider kits are much better.

I've found that the cider kits taste a bit rough when first made, but if you can keep your hands off it for a couple of months, the improvement in taste is considerable. 8)

I use table sugar instead rather than glucose, it doesn't ferment out quite as well and the end result is not quite so dry. It's still pretty dry though!

I <3 dry cider. Westons EXTRA dry is awful though. Like bloody champagne..

After about 3-4 weeks in shed this cider has come out crystal clear, a bit fizzy and with a nice refreshing taste. Quite clean.

Sadly it lacks any real body or character. Decent enough tho :)

I'm inspired to make a batch with some Whitelabs yeast for next year now.
Eighteen months?!

I've not managed to keep a bottle for eighteen days yet.
