Youngs Harvest Pilsner - does this sound ok?

Post by HomeBrewSels » Thu Jan 10, 2008 11:18 am

Onto my 4th brew and all had been going well but I'm beginning to think I've hit a snag with my latest attempt...

I've got a Youngs Harvest Pilsner 1.7kg kit in the bucket but all does not appear well. I've read through numerous old post's and decided to waiver from the pack instructions slightly by replacing 500g of the 1.5kg added sugar with spraymalt - ie, I used 1kg white sugar and 500g spraymalt. I also used the standard yeast supplied with the kit.

I'm now a week into the initial fermentation but there is no foamy/scummy head at the top of the bucket? The bucket is in my garage but I'm using a new heating tray (thanks Santa) and have wrapped it in blankets to try and retain the heat?

I'm just a little worried that things aren't happening as they should - any thoughts?!

Whats the gravity? Maybe it's finished?

also whats the temperature ? Even with a heat tray it might be quite cold especially at night.

I checked the gravity last night and got a reading of 1006 - I think its pbly finished? Seems pretty quick though, thought it would take more than a week?

That sounds about right to me. I'd have thought you would get the big foamy head after a day or two. I've only done two kits but both finished after about 4-5 days though I let them stand for about 10.
