Finished fermenting a kit beer (Coopers IPA) about 2 weeks ago. I transferred it into a sterilized king keg, sealed it and left it sitting for 2 weeks. I was intially going to wait for 4 weeks before tasting...but curiosity got the better of me as its my first ever brew. hehe
tasted some yesterday, and wasnt too impressed. the beer is still VERY cloudy and has a very watery taste - will this improve with the next 2 weeks maturing? Initial gravity was 1033, final gravity was 1004, giving a estimated abv of 3.8% - i think.
Is my kit ok?
If you are maturing the beer at room temperature then it will take longer to clear as the yeast is more inclined to stay in suspension at temps over 12c
As far as mouthfeel goes it's something i always felt was lacking with kit beers. I have had it with AG beers though when I've mashed lower than 66c
You might try using brewbody from the homebrew store as it is supposed to add a bit of mouthfeel due to the dextrin sugars it contains.
Some brewers take a couple of pints of the wort and boil it on the stove in a pan to thicken it up and caramilize some of the sugars and then add it back to the main batch and topping with water to make up to the brewlength required.

the lack of mouth feel and maltly taste has to do with the malt is too fermentable 1.004 will give you a watery taste as there is little malt left. In an AG you would expect it to be around 8 or 9.
You can still throw in some finnings in if it is too cloudy or use a pewter tankard.
Is it a top or bottom tap? if bottom it could just be sediment being drawn when you pull the beer
Coopers say you should
Use with 500g Light Dry Malt + 300g Dextrose.
bit of a cheat on their part, here's a beer kit but it won't taste good unless you buy these other ingredients.
So that will be why it tastes watery

i bought the kit from art-of-brewing.co.uk - their site reccomends using their "beer kit enhancer", which i assume equates to the special sugars reccommended by coopers. i added finings as well, but this hasnt helped clear the beer. could it be an infection? what signs would i be looking for to tell the difference between a cloudy beer and an infected one? its a top-tap king keg
I believe Beer Kit Enhancer is 50/50 DME and sugar. An expense you can avoid by buying the ingredients next time.Tidyguy wrote:i bought the kit from art-of-brewing.co.uk - their site reccomends using their "beer kit enhancer", which i assume equates to the special sugars reccommended by coopers. i added finings as well, but this hasnt helped clear the beer. could it be an infection? what signs would i be looking for to tell the difference between a cloudy beer and an infected one? its a top-tap king keg

The taste/smell is a damn good indicator as to infection. You don't mention anything off so I'm guessing it's probably okay.
