Now I have my first brew (Burpacks Birkby Bitter) under my belt and in the keg I feel I need to get the Wherry I orgionally ordered from Easybrew (yes it came eventually) on the go as I have already tried the burpack from the keg and I can see it going fast! Basically Is it just the case taht I need to make up the kit as usually with just the 3kg of malt extract or would you reccoment steeping some hops and if so what and how at all to improve it? Also thinking of getting one of the cheaper 1.5kg -1.8kg kits and micing with spray malt. What do youi guys reccomend and can they be as good as the 3kg kits if done right with the correct additions?
Cheers
Wherry - Second Brew
Re: Wherry - Second Brew
Gonna keep an eye on this thread - asked for ideas on my own second brew and Wherry popped up, so any pointers I can get before I do it myself will go down well

Re: Wherry - Second Brew
Wherry isn't a bad brew on it's own, so I'd give it a go as is, or be it, I'd think about changing the standard yeast offering to Safe04, as Wherry is known to take a little time to clear.
I've made a Wherry & was suitably impressed with it, it does like to be in the Keg for a few weeks as it deffo gets better with age (4 weeks).
As for 'tinkering' kits, if you plan to play with a basic kit, then you could go for any of the Coopers range but it may be an idea to make it 'standard' or be it with DME as you may be surprised at how good they already are. As an alternative, you could by 3kg of DME, a hand full of specalist grain & some hops & give that a try ?

I would second that.Waffty wrote:Wherry isn't a bad brew on it's own, so I'd give it a go as is, or be it, I'd think about changing the standard yeast offering to Safe04, as Wherry is known to take a little time to clear.

I do like to tinker with kits, but the Wherry kit is excellent as it is, and I've never felt the need to add anything to it. It's one of the few kits which manages to give a full hop flavour and aroma, other canned kit brands just don't seem to be able to do the same.
Re: Wherry - Second Brew
The coopers kits are generally very good. I suggest whatever kit you make up if its a one tin kit make it up with spraymalt or beer enhancer in place of sugar as suggested but add nothing else the first time you make it.
You will doubtless end up with a great brew and this way you have a baseline which you can tinker with in the future to your own taste by adding hops and grains.

OK Ill think Ill take all your advice and leave the Wherry as is. I was just feeling a little adventurous after the success of my first Brupacks.
With regards to the 1.5Kg kits I will try one of the coopers and use 1kg of light spraymalt and some steeped hops. Does anyone have a more precise recipe or does this sound OK? I was looking at the Coopers IPA btw has anyone tried this? Will I be able to make a better beer than the 3kg kits doing this or not? I just wanted to save some money that’s all but I guess I won't save that much after the extra 1kg of spraymalt.
I like your suggestion of getting some speciality matls waffy but I have a lot of questions about and I don’t have a mash tun to steep the grains.
