Should I have kept fermenting bin lid sealed?

Post by gordong » Wed Nov 12, 2008 11:12 pm

4 days ago I made my first bitter kit in a standard fermenting bin with a snap-on lid. Fermentation has gone well and is now down to 1011. However, reading these forums I am wondering if I should have kept the lid sealed (it has a small hole in it).

I have just kept mine "sitting on" the bin without snapping it shut. I have also had a few peeks in to see what's going on.

Have I maybe spoiled the brew by it not being sealed?

Really appreciate any advice.

PS am really impressed by all the advice on this site!

Nope, it'll be fine. You done right with the lid, though I wouldn't open it unnecessarily to often.

Just to add an iresistable bit of historical context to all this, Gordong:

Back in the day, we were advised to just sling a Towel over the top of what ever 5 G bucket we'd managed to have got our hands on! A dampened towel was considered quite the State of the Art!

Can ye imagine the Horrors? I was living in some crummy hole ~ still am, come to think of it. But this time it's by choice and at least I can keep bloody warm! ~ and used to regularly examine my towel. Consider it a bit on the dry side. Whip it off and go wandering out to the kitchen sink, where I'd sling it in. Run the tap over it. Wring it out - with unwashed, let alone 'sanitised' hands. Then stroll back into my FV and sling the towel back over it.

If the head rose so much as to soak the towel? I'd take it out and wash it off in the sink. No sense of urgency or lip biting involved. I was just doing what the bloke in the book said. And he never said " Thou shalt shit thine self. " So I didn't. Know what? Never had a brew go wrong on me!

That's not to say it can't or won't. I'm just. I guess, trying to point out that an 'Infection' is probably more likely to be there, in an improperly sanitised piece of kit, than it is to materialise out of the air, once that head starts forming and the gasses start to rise

Just throttle back and adopt the mind set that all will be fine. Which it is, in probably 99% of cases. Sanitise like five gallons depends on it. Then observe the basic rules and let nature take its course. I do.
