I used to make bitter using Boots Best Bitter kit regularly, but have not done so for a few years. I picked up a couple of out of date tins recently, but they lack the instructions and I can't remember how much sugar to use - can anyone help ?
It is the 1.7kg tin, and I seem to remember I used to add 2kg sugar - is that about right ?
Also will the packet of dried (2002) yeast be any good, or should I buy some more ?
Thanks

How much sugar for Boots best bitter kit ?
Re: How much sugar for Boots best bitter kit ?
It should be 1kg of sugar I would think based on other 1.7kg kits.
Re: How much sugar for Boots best bitter kit ?
Yep, 1kg of sugar. That kit must be quite an age!
I would very much doubt that the yeast is OK.

Re: How much sugar for Boots best bitter kit ?
Excellent thanks.
I have started the brew successfully with 1kg sugar and some new yeast.
Now I just need to know how much sugar to use for the secondary fermentation, in the 5 gallon barrel - I seem to remember just a couple of tablespoonfuls ?

About 80 grammes in 5 gallons.

Can't wait to find out how it tastes! Wondering if the can wouls somehow mature with age before brewing

Re: How much sugar for Boots best bitter kit ?
I'll let you know how it tastes! It's taken 10 days to reach 1.004 and doesn't seem to be moving, so I guess I'll give it another couple of days, then barrel it (with 80g sugar)
Thanks

Pity ye never used DSM instead of SS. Bet it would've tasted better than any Boots kit ye remember drinking.
