Best way to take a hydro reading...

Ok....on with my second kit brew now. I learnt loads from the 1st brew I made and am hoping to find a whole new bunch of mistakes to learn from. Just a quick question about taking a hydrometer reading. didnt have a hydro for my 1st brew, so have bought one this time, along with a trial jar. Is it best to drop the hydro straight into the fv and take the reading that way, or run some beer off through the tap in the fv into the trial jar and use that to take the reading.

I don't think there is a best way, I prefer draining some into the trial jar for 2 reasons, you don't have to sterilise the hydrometer and you get to have a taste of the brew after measuring

the only problem i saw with thsi is wouldnt opening the tap at the bottom cause an air bubble to rise up through the beer?

Personally, I like to use a turkey baster into the measuring vessle.

Air won't bubble up but you might get some through the airlock if fitted, I'd just crack the lid slightly.

Turkey baster has to be Sanitised before hand.

All i do is clear some froth from the top an drop the hydro in then spend about 10 mins trying to prevent it from drifting into the foam so i can get a good reading. really must invest in a FV with a tap
