I must have done something wrong in a previous life...
I barelled the above kit a week ago and thought i'd give it a try last night. Not impressed so far cider is the nearest thing to describe it so far. Its been priming a week so far is it still ealy days? Its sitting in the spare bedroom at the moment.
I've had poor results so far with my kits so far (See my previous posts for the full story!). I was beginning to convince myself that it must be an issue with water so I made this kit with eden falls water from asda.
Made with can of liquid malt extract, made as per kits instructions, also added a campden tablet. Everything sterilised religiously.
Fermentation went from 1060 - 1010 so pretty happy, had a sample tasted reasonable, still had funny tang to it which i have had in all kits so far.
I'm also drinking my coopers stout at the moment which although is drinkable (My first real drinkable kit) is not stunning as it seems to be for everyone else.
I'm storing the barrels in the garage at the moment is this too cold?
I'm just hoping it improves, its cost my well over 30 quid to make this kit. Seriously thinking of giving this lark up!

It is worth leaving your beer for at least another 4-5 weeks to condition.Hopefully that cider taste will disappear and you will be left with something drinkable.

Apologies if I have misunderstood here, and also being of little experience with brewing. I am only repeating what I have have been told, but, am I right in thinking that the camden tablet (and probably half a tablet would do), is only to treat the water before brewing to get rid of nasties. Someone suggested to me adding half a crushed camden tablet to the 5 gallons of water, making sure it was completed desolved, and to let it stand for 24 hours before use. If you have added the camden tablet to the 'brew' when you are mixing the lot together, just before you add the yeast, then this could be the reason for the poor taste. Again, apologies if I am 'teaching my grandmather to suck eggs' (as the expression goes), but it's just a thought.Made with can of liquid malt extract, made as per kits instructions, also added a campden tablet. Everything sterilised religiously.

Half a campden tablet is sufficient to treat 23l (5 gallons) of water. This must be added to the water before it is mixed with the wort. 24 hours really isn't necessary, a matter of minutes prior to using the water is fine. If you have forgotton this step and already mixed the water with the wort forget it, it's too late. It's not necessarily the end of the world if you forget to add Campden, it depends on how heavily chlorinated your water is. I've forgotton in the past and got away with it.
