Coopers Stout in the FV :)

Post by WishboneBrewery » Mon Feb 02, 2009 11:16 pm

I toyed with the idea of splitting the batch in two and adding extra stuff to one of them, but I'm lazy so its all in one FV with 1kg DSM, a teaspoon of yeast nutrient and I rehydrated the yeast for a good 20+mins before pitching, did some major aeration of the wort too. Pitched at 26 Deg C and took an OG reading of 1036.
For my first taste of DSM, Yummy stuff... Malted Milk Biscuits Mmmm, even the Coopers concentrated wort tasted pretty good straight out of the can :)

Is this brew good to leave for 10days in the FV or is it better to bottle once its reached a steady FG? (will be bottling in plastic)... and what is a good time scale for conditioning?

Cheers :)

 All sounds pretty good to me, mate. And isn't the malt lovely?! Sit and spoon it straight out of the bag, couldn't ye?

Ten days or 'a steady FG' ? Entirely up to you, really. Though ten days is probably the purists favourite. It will give the bits and pieces that bit longer to sink, thus ensuring ye running off that bit clearer a beer. And, incidentally, I find Coopers Stout leaves a nice, solid kind of gunk at the bottom of the FV. So, once it's settled down there, it really does tend to stay there. Assuming ye going to let it out through the tap, that is?

I wonder though, as ye going to bottle it? I've read of these Bottling Sticks. But I didn't retain how they operate as I never bottle beers. Either way, I'm sure ye'll do fine.

Not sure what bottled Coopers Stout will taste like. I, personally speaking, don't like bottled beers. I drink them, in the absence of my preference. But, I don't ever choose them. I guess, if ye like ye beer out of bottles? Ye'll probably like Coopers Stout that way.

Oh, alright. I give in. What I'm Really trying to avoid saying is; WTF are ye playing at?! Bottling Coopers Stout?! FFS!

There. Said it. I feel better now 8)

is it normally about 24 hours before you see the yeast doing it stuff?

btw, the bottling stick (http://www.18000feet.com/how/bottle.htm did it with the drum tap) worked absolutely great. :)

Yes, it can take 24 hours + for the beer to look like it's fermenting.

cool, cheers... Just checking.

Rehydrating yeast and pitching feels like 'lighting the blue touch-paper on a firework' only to see it go out but you're never really sure so you stand well back!

:D go stout go!! mine has managed(just) to stay in the fv but i purchased a larger one from hop & grape last week but its up top stroking the lid!! there is a bubbler in just because the hole was there but i have cracked the lid off a bit other wise i reckon it would be like krackatowa through the little bubblers exit hole  this batch i am doing now i might stick a bit in a few bottles and try and hide for a few months to see what it will be like leaving it to mature that long.my first batch is nearly gone and tastes amazing still getting different smells and tastes smell very chocolately and has a nice kick yo it now.
i think a plan would be to brew one every week then eventually one batch would actually mature for a month or so instead of a week or so!! dont suppose it matters if it tastes good and gets better then its just a bonus ,i guess..if that makes sense?

5 Days in the FV and its settled down now, and enough clear surface area to plop in the hydrometer which looks to be sating about FG:1010 making for an (ABV): 3.41%. I presume this figure sounds right for 1KG of DSM instead of sugar?
I'll probably give it the 10 days and bottle later next week.

Bottled this evening, primed the bottling bucket.
Got this lot at about 20 Deg C for the next week :)

Had a little taste, not bad for straight out of the FV... fingers crossed yet again for a few weeks time :)

Mine had stabilised about 1010/1008 (depending on how I read it), 6 day brew. :)
