Coopers Stout + extra bittering hops etc?

Post by WishboneBrewery » Mon Mar 30, 2009 6:29 pm

What would be a good hop variety to add some bittering / Flavour / and maybe a bit of aroma to a Coopers Stout?

I've got Fuggles, Target and Saaz in the house, but I'm sure I've read something on here that Goldings or Fuggles go well with a stout, I think I'd be happy to add a good bit more bittering in the Coopers. Can anyone recommend a hop choice and an amount to boil please?

Also, if I did just go for bittering rather than flavour would the Target Hops be the best bet?
I've almost run out of Coopers stout now which isn't a good situation, I'm thinking I'll go for the 1Kg Dark Spray Malt again + Hops + either 500g Malto Dextrin or Wheat Spray Malt for some extra head retention.

Cheers :)

I've just brewed up a coopers stout this morning. I steeped some goldings hops in the tin before swilling out (about 15 mins) for aroma. I used my usual 1kg of dark spray malt but added 100g wheat spray malt for head retention, I didn't want to change too much at first as it's so good normally. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Yeah, I don't want to spoil it as its gone down very well.
I'd just like that bit more edge on it, I'll see about some getting some Goldings... I'll do a similar 100g of wheat. I may get time to get it in an FV at the weekend.
Cheers :)

:| Now ye thinking like a woman. " ..... but I'll soon change him! ". See? How many times ye ever heard a bloody woman say that of a bloke she's taken up with?

Why? If he's so off centre of what she wants; Why not find what she wants in the first place? Why take a perfectly good bloke and start trying to twist him all out of shape to suit her whims?

See what I'm saying? Maybe there's another kit out there that already offers ye a more bitter, flavoursome, aromatic and heady pint of stout? Or how about kicking off with a tin of Coopers extract and formulating something to ye own tastes from there?

Aww... did I just kick sand in your face...

I 'State name' pledge allegiance to Coopers Stout, will honour and protect its smooth drinking and easy going character.

She'll still talk to me in the morning even if I adulterate her with Fuggles or Goldings ;)

For my second ever brew, coopers stout was and is fine and I'll be brewing more frequently I'm sure so on balance I'd say she'll enjoy the bit of Wheat malt ;)

No. Not at all. I suspect ye misconstrued my meaning though. What I'm trying to say is that Coopers isn't the only stout kit out there. Ye seem to have a good idea of exactly what ye seeking, and 'straight' Coopers isn't quite it. Might one of the other stout kits provide nearer ye ideal, without the fuss? How about the Coopers Irish Stout kit?

Forgive me, only; A/ I'm no where near 'up' enough on my hops to even begin to grasp what you're trying to achieve there. And B/ I haven't experienced any other stout kits. I just struck lucky  Thus the only thing I feel prone to do to a straight brew of Coopers Stout is add less water and 'Oomph' it a tad. If I were looking for a radically different flavour? I'd be sampling other stout kits. See?

ahh, yes....
Its the Language barrier! Me being a Yorkshireman! ;)

Yeah, I suppose I could try another stout kit, but I'm more than happy with the way the Coopers Stout (£9.99 + Spray Malt) works out and I'm thinking of tweaking what is good, its all an experiment and its all about learning as well as drinking :)
